Would One Million Shorts Views and Long-Form Views Earn the Same?

Same views, different experience

A Short and a ten-minute YouTube video might both reach one million views. That does not mean both creators receive the same advertising income. Each format uses a different ad placement and revenue-sharing structure.

Watch-page advertising

For eligible partners, YouTube's Watch Page Monetization Module shares 55% of net revenue from relevant ads. The amount still varies with viewers, countries, advertiser demand and suitability. Video duration alone does not guarantee a payout.

Shorts revenue sharing

YouTube pools ads appearing between Shorts and allocates a Creator Pool by eligible engaged views and country, accounting for licensing. Monetizing creators receive 45% of the revenue allocated to them. Those percentages cannot be directly compared without considering different bases.

Not all views mean the same thing

Visible Shorts view counts and engaged views eligible for advertising payouts are not necessarily identical. Eligibility and module acceptance also matter. Avoid treating a public view count as an invoice from YouTube.

Which format suits a channel?

Shorts can bring new viewers quickly, while longer videos can deliver deeper stories and build sustained viewing. Production effort, audience mix and any sponsorships affect overall profitability.
